Having to balance school and sports can seem impossible to the average student. The idea of playing at the top of your game and also performing in the classroom is difficult just to think about. The ability to balance sports and school is hard, but there is an even smaller percentage that can continuously be prosperous on the field and in the classroom. Guy Mobeka is somehow part of that percentage and he has been doing it for his entire high school career.
Mobeka is the captain of the soccer team at Glenelg High School. He started playing at three years-old when his father put the ball at his feet. After falling in love with the sport, it was not hard for him to constantly improve and stay motivated. Most of his motivation came from the pride of his father and the thirst to continuously excel at the game. Therefore, Mobeka is able to continue his play at Mount Saint Mary’s University. Playing a sport can have an enormous influence on a person’s ability to work hard on their academics. Mobeka actually didn't have as much of a problem as any average student would. He continued to work hard and understood that school comes before athletics. At Mount Saint Mary’s, he plans to study biochemistry and sees himself as an Orthopedic Surgeon in the future. Having that advanced of a goal shows how motivated he is for the future. Understanding the sacrifices he had to make to achieve that goal shows determination and responsibility going into college.
Now in his final months of high school, Mobeka is able to look back at all the memories. When asked about the mark he wants to leave at Glenelg, Mobeka stated, “ I want to be remembered a someone who was a hard worker and was determined.” If Mobeka was able to give advice to his Freshman self, he would say: “take advantage of every opportunity.” Mobeka believes he was successful as a high school student and concludes that he made made his mark at Glenelg. Mobeka feels that with the support group he had and the great community he lives in, it's hard not to strive for the best and to be the best. Because of this attitude, Mobeka can venture onto college with a great background and a bright future.
